Entries - Embellished Bowls/Platters

Offset New Guinea rosewood bowl with textured rim. 14 cm diameter by 4 cm high.  Rim was textured with a reciprocating engraving tool. Finished with oil and beeswax.

Platter turned out of kauri and embellished with pyrography and gilders paste. Image of the New Zealand morepork owl (ruru) and ruru feathers on the rim. Stand made out of rimu and carved. Finished with Danish oil. Platter diameter 220mm standing 250mm on stand.

Macrocarpa centrepiece plate with large carved margin. Coloured finish is layers of spirit stain with topcoats of interference paint. Final finish several coats of stain polyurethane lacquer. The plate is 28cm in dia and 4cm high. 

Green turned and hand carved from a single piece of Indian bead tree. Outer: Indian ink, chalk acrylic, waterbased dye, matte clear acrylic sealer. Inner: soybean oil, beeswax and carnauba wax.  Dimensions: 23 cm diameter, 10 cm high.

Wood:  swamp kauri. Finish: Danish oil. Size: 220 mm wide x 70 mm high. Embellishment: hand carved flutes. 

A Kahikatea undercut bowl, embellished with pyrography, dye and gold leaf and finished with lacquer. Dimensions 340mm diameter x 

Macrocarpa bowl with gold/blue acrylic pearl band top and bottom. Five coats of 30% gloss 50% thinned sprayed lacquer. Buffed with Yorkshire grit.  Size 360 dia x 70. 

Tōtara, soybean oil, beeswax, carnauba wax.  One piece with the outer curve continuing past the beaded foot.  Dimensions: 323 mm diameter, 21 mm high. 1.5 mm thick at the rim.

Tulip bowl turned soon after learning to turn, exploring embellishment and the affects. Size 180mm x 40mm.

This piece is turned very thin out of Cypress (4mm) with carved  and textured background in black lacquer with green /gold colour shift highlighting the webbing. Weightless with textures appealing to the senses to hold in the hand 230mm D x 160mm H 

Kahikatea bowl with a black and white concept, pyrography basket weave pattern on the interior to give the illusion of a basket, finished with lacquer W160mm x H55mm.

This yew corsican pine embellishment is incorporated in polymer resin with mica powder to give this effect of looking like roses.   230mm x 30mm deep. Five coats of lacquer. Buffed Yorkshire grit.
