Entries - Plain Bowls/Platters

A 300mm x 95mm, deeply undercut puriri rim bowl,  friction wax finished. Mostly clear timber, has a spot with pressure stress ripples in one area and confused grain akin to burl in another, seamlessly fusing confusion and order into one.

Ancient kauri 280dia x 150h.  Turned to a form to highlight the beauty that was within.  The chatoyance and depth of grain have further been enhanced with Danish oil to give an appearance of depth of water in a pond.

Suburban-grown ash that got too big for its long-term survival.  Finished with Beall buff.  Diameter 340mm, 60mm high.

A stunning black walnut bowl that will enhance any dining table, finished with three coats of bees wax. W=290mm and H= 70mm.

Boneheart rimu from Waiiti Beach, Taranaki.  Finished with french polish/shellac.  W=310mm / H=65mm

Contrasting  walnut and maple of differing produce ellipses and show striped patterns from different angles, even inverted omegas. 140 mm W x 166 H. Base 30mm. Finish Triple E and wax.    

Large avocado wood bowl. Finished with Danish oil.  D 350mm H 105mm.

Made from New Zealand swamp kauri. An elegant bowl with beautiful shape as well as vibrant green and other hues. It can be placed as a show piece or used as a nut bowl.  D: 180 mm, H: 60 mm.

Gleditsia triacanthus is the fancy name for this colourful garden tree which also produces nice turning wood.  The finish is Beall buff.  Size 260mm wide and 80 high.

Pin oak bowl turned on two planes. Finished with Osmo oil ready for nuts or nibbles.  160mm corner to corner and 40mm deep.

Four-sided asymmetric bowl turned with a curved rim. due to the asymmetric shape, all corners end at different heights. Beautiful ancient kauri figure inside the bowl. Danish oil finish. 220x155mm

Figured macrocarpa bowl, with a lacquer finish.  270mm wide x 75mm high.

Swamp kauri fruit bowl Beall buffed.  D 230mm H 120mm.

Red beech burl, finished in six coats of sprayed 30% gloss 50% thinned lacquer,  buffed with Yorkshire grit, 180 x 45.

A small rimu platter with a subtle ogee curve to give it lift, and a stunning grain pattern. Wax finish.  Height is 2.7cm, with a diameter of 21cm

This smaller oak (Quercus palustris) still provides the delight of oak grain in the wood.  Finish is Beall buff.  230mm wide and 80 high.

Puriri platter Beall buffed.  D 320mm H 55mm.

Aged and stressed pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) finished with Beall buff.  Width 330mm, height 80mm.
