Coolibah burl 250w x 40h. Three delicate feet and carved detailed leaves which picture frame and draw the eye to the beauty of the bowl. The lightness of this piece is a delight to hold. Danish oil finish.
Red mallee burl 300dia x 40h. Rim carved and embellished to create an illusion of leaves on the forest floor. The bowl is a pond darkened by the same falling leaf matter yet dappled light shines onto its surface.
Ancient kauri 480dia x 45mmh. The carved rim represents where land joins the sea. The ripples being the tidal waves and the dappled texture being sand. The carving is hī ika to fish with a line. Lacquer and gilders paste.
Black maire 140 x 80 x 80mm. Turned from one piece, the illusion has been created similar to a tear top on a can. The leaf has been embellished to enhance the realism. A delicate work with the how did he do that factor !
English oak turned wet very thin, left to find its natural shape as a canvas that has been pieced, carved and embellished. Extra detail has been added to achieve a realism seen in New Zealand at Christmas. 300h x 240w
Kauri turned as a platter, halved and reconstructed to be a double-sided hollow vessel which was then carved with an abundance or Pohutukawa blossom. 600l x 320h x 130w. To see pohutukawa in full bloom at Christmas is iconic.
Puriri 110dia 190h. The native pigeon (kererū) delights feeding on the berries of the majestic puriri tree. The external texture represents the bark of the tree with three feet blended into the leaves give a majestic reach for the sky.
Made from one piece of kwila with an ebony finial. 160l x 70w x 150h. The mix of catenary curves blend to hold a suspended form which has been embellished to draw the eye. The finial represents the spire on an Asian temple.
Yew 250h 190dia. Carved leaves and copper inlay carved with Pohutukawa flowers. The colour of the wood is natural with an oil finish to highlight the grain. The realism in the leaves and flowers are testament to detail added.
