This was a hard one to hollow. Lemonwood with 13 knots, walnut finial, six coats 30% gloss 50% thinned sprayed lacquer. Buffed with Yorkshire grit, Dia 155 x 290.

Hollow forms must have been made from a single piece of wood and hollowed through a hole which is significantly smaller than the diameter of the finished work. Vases must be higher than they are wide and have been hollowed. Hollow forms and vases must be predominantly wood but may be decorated with other materials.
Carved from single block of cherry (both jaws and teeth), Allosaurus skull measures 310 (L) x 200 (H) x 150 mm (W). Lower jaw is separate. Upper jaw and brain case hollowed out via brain stem, nasal, eye, ear sockets. Wood sealed and coated with polyurethane.
Totara timber from Dargaville Grandstand 1911-2001. The tops have retained the original octagonal shape of the timber. This is a one piece double vase with French polish/ shellac finish. W=105mm /H=285mm/Vase depth= 118mm

Turned from an Ancient Kauri nodule carbon dated at 2500 years old, this piece is a combination of gum, bark and highly figured wood grain. BLO oiled and sealed off with beeswax and hand buffed, 225mmH x 145mmW
Turned and carved from a piece of whiteywood that had two branches growing at the head of another branch. Hollowed through the pith of the main branch and left to warp. 115mm high x 100mm wide. Wood wax finish.
This wet turned pot designed to wobble, create movement and draw you in to interact with it. Made from aspen poplar wood with a 3mm wall thickness 3mm and coloured wood dyes. Diameter: 130mm Height: 90mm Finish 30% lacquer.
This has two leaf patterns one has the teeth from a taniwha and waka hoe paddle on the other that wraps around the opening. Made from feijoa and has a 3mm wall thickness. Diameter: 112mm Height: 98mm Finish 30% lacquer.
This hollow form is made from ash. It does have a crack, but unfortunately sometime that is what you get with wood. 185mm high, 105mm wide.
Ancient kauri hollow form. The ancient kauri used has incredible figure and chatoyance, looking like dancing flames when light falls on it. Embellished with pyrography. Finished with Danish oil. 190x120mm
As I was carving the feet of this, a tui came to our kowhai tree. It inspired me to carve the opening of the vase in a silhouette of the head with its two distinctive feathers. Olive wood 150mm tall.
Cross grained hollow form with natural edge rim. Soybean oil beeswax carnauba wax. Unidentified juniper species, planted 1935. Dimensions: 19 cm diameter, 19 cm tall.
This vase 280 x 110 mm is a combination of ancient kauri and resin. The resin is shades of forest green colour to represent the kauri foliage tapering from the bottom to the top.

English oak turned wet very thin, left to find its natural shape as a canvas that has been pieced, carved and embellished. Extra detail has been added to achieve a realism seen in New Zealand at Christmas. 300h x 240w
