Last of a larger Elm burr. Most of the bark was missing. It was so fractured and holey I wasn't sure it was turnable. Delighted it got a second chance at life! 110 Dia. x 165 H. Mirotone Danish Oil.
Inspired by a park boarder in Foxton, lifting the box form to another level. Sandblasted and airbrushed to add a textural contrast. 70 Dia. x 105 H. Swamp Totara (box and finial) Kahikatea (lid). Mirotone 3242 sanding sealer, Museum Polish.
Making a statement there is no reason why domestic objects shouldn't be decorative, or that beautiful things shouldn't be used and enjoyed. 265 Dia. x 45 H. Recycled Rimu, epoxy resin, seaside flotsam. Mirotone 3242 sanding sealer, friction applied Carnauba.
I nearly rejected this 19,000 year old Swamp Kauri blank, after opening up the bug hole. I am pleased I persisted and am delighted with the warm figured result. 300 Dia. X 50H. Mirotone 3242 sanding Sealer, Friction applied Carnauba wax.
Sorry, I couldn't resist! This pretty piece of London Plane turned and finished beautifully, the only issue finding the mid-way between a bowl & a platter.... A little piece of whimsy. 260 Dia. X 40H Mirotone 3242 Sanding sealer, Museum polish.
Pushing the experimental boundaries further; a decorative showpiece includes the stand. A combination of layering and foreshortening techniques gives a 3D effect. 310 Dia. x 70 H. Swamp Kauri, epoxy resin. Airbrushed designs. Mirotone 3242 sanding sealer, friction Carnauba wax.
Experiment in techniques and, like my school reports, "Could do better" comes to mind. Proved the theories sound enough, but with room to improve. 110 Dia. x 190 H. Macrocarpa, epoxy resin, coloured, airbrushed designs. Mirotone sanding sealer, Museum Polish.
A little hollow-form kinetic experiment with a nod of thanks to David Sengel for showing us that black-on-black can work so well. A technique I will explore again. 80 Dia. X 140 H. Dyed Macrocarpa, sandblasted, painted, carved (lid).
A rough old case-hardened Red Beech burr given a second chance with the addition of an epoxy resin rim. Reminiscent of sunset at the beach. 150 Dia. X 100 H. Epoxy, colours, iridescent powders. Mirotone pure Danish oil.
Vessels as close as Maori got to 'Turned' bowls. Hollowed using burning embers. Decorated with fern leaves. Here contemporised with addition of a lid. Swamp Kauri, 160 Dia. X 115 H. Whalebone, greenstone, burned, sandblasted. Danish oil.
This Yew stump was an interesting turning challenge. It 'blossomed' into this beautiful flower. Worth the effort of applying 15 coats of Danish oil, achieving the lovely soft glow it deserved. 200 Dia. X 100 H. Yew, Mirotone Danish Oil.
